Phnom Penh (FN), Sep. 20 – Manufacturing contributes over 30% to the economies of Puerto Rico and Ireland, with pharmaceuticals playing a key role.

Puerto Rico became a manufacturing hub due to a now-expired tax exemption, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the $66 billion in US pharmaceutical exports in 2020. Ireland, a key vaccine exporter, has been involved in pharmaceutical production since the 1960s.

In Asia, five of the top 10 manufacturing countries are found, including China, South Korea, and newer hubs like Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Globally, manufacturing makes up 15% of the economy, behind services at 67%.
