Phnom Penh (FN), Sep. 18 – Could the ECCC win the gold medal at the Archival Games 2024? This competition, organized by the International Council on Archives' Sport Archives Section (ICA/SPO), invites archivists and records managers from around the world to “demonstrate their skills and creativity” through a short video, published on Instagram or Twitter.

Speed and volume, endurance, teamwork, freestyle… These are the challenge categories – inspired by the Paris Olympic Games – allowing participants to showcase their work and inspire other members of the archival community. It’s a great opportunity to highlight a profession that remains relatively unknown in Cambodia, yet is crucial for preserving the kingdom’s cultural and historical heritage.

The ECCC archives contain all documents regarding investigations, trials, and appeals, including evidence and judicial conclusions related to the Khmer Rouge trials. Due to their significant historical and legal value, these documents are maintained, preserved, and managed in both paper and digital formats, in compliance with international standards. Public records can be accessed in paper form at the ECCC’s Resource Centre in Phnom Penh or online at archive.eccc.gov.kh.

The ECCC archives are fully digitized and stored in Phnom Penh. They hold over 232,000 documents comprising nearly 2.4 million pages, including more than 1,350 judicial decisions and orders, 670 hearing transcripts and tens of thousands of evidentiary exhibits.

In 2023, the ECCC became a member of the International Council on Archives (ICA), the largest professional association in the field of archives. Membership allows the ECCC to exchange experiences with international experts, share best practices in records management, and pursue the highest standards of archival preservation in Cambodia. This strengthens the ECCC’s ability to share best practices with other Cambodian institutions and stakeholders, as well as to facilitate training on good governance, accountability, and transparency in archive management.
