Phnom Penh (FN), Sep. 17 – A spokesperson for Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a statement on Tuesday (Sep. 17) clarifying the closure of the Swedish Section Office in Phnom Penh.
According to the statement, the Embassy in Bangkok will continue to represent Sweden in Cambodia and the Consulate of Sweden in Phnom Penh will remain open and continue to offer basic consular services for Swedish citizens in Cambodia.
Despite the closure of the the Swedish Section Office in Phnom Penh, other diplomatic missions have recently expanded their presence in Cambodia. These include the opening of the Turkish Embassy in April 2023, the Australian Embassy's Trade and Investment Office in January 2024, and the Canadian Consulate in Siem Reap in February 2024.
According to the Embassy’s Facebook page, the Embassy of Sweden Section Office in Phnom Penh will be formally closed and cease operations on 30 September 2024. Since 16 August, the management of the support to Cambodia under the regional strategy for development cooperation with Asia and the Pacific has been transferred to the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida - Styrelsen för Internationellt Utvecklingssamarbete) in Stockholm.
