Phnom Penh (FN), Sep. 16 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reflected on the Royal Government of Cambodia’s sovereignty during the COVID19 pandemic, speaking on Monday (Sep. 16) during a groundbreaking ceremony of Calmette Hospital's new buildings.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that during the COVID19 crisis, all countries had to become self-reliant, as no one could offer help due to the overwhelming number of cases. International transit was temporarily halted.
“At the height of COVID19, we had to rely on our own capabilities. If our doctors had not been skilled, we would have faced greater danger and higher fatalities. Each country closed its borders and airspace, leaving everyone responsible for their own citizens,” Samdech Thipadei underscored.
During that time, doctors were given the necessary authority, supported by a strong policy framework and leadership. This, combined with the dedication of volunteer medical teams and hospital staff at both national and sub-national levels, contributed to Cambodia's success in the fight against COVID19.
Samdech Thipadei also expressed his gratitude to Mam Bunheng, former Health Minister, the Ministry’s leadership, and all doctors who worked tirelessly to overcome challenges and protect the health of the citizens.
In this regard, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet urged doctors, technical staff, and health workers in both the public and private sectors to focus more on preventive and primary care services to avoid the progression of diseases into serious or chronic conditions, which are costly for patients, families, the healthcare system, and social protection programs.
Samdech Thipadei reminded doctors to build and maintain trust by adhering to professional ethics when communicating with patients and their families. He also encouraged the involvement of patients and families in treatment decisions and stressed the importance of sharing knowledge and expertise in early diagnosis, treatment, prevention, chronic condition management, and patient care.
