Phnom Penh (FN), Sep. 13 – The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) expressed deepest disappointment and regret over the unjust decision of the US Department of the Treasury on 12 September 2024, targeting Cambodian businessman Ly Yong Phat, a member of the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the CPP and LY.P. Group Co., Ltd and four other related businesses.
"The baseless and unjust allegations of involvement in forced labor and cybercrime are politically motivated, hindering efforts to improve bilateral relations. Moreover, the punishment of Ly Yong Phat represents a violation of Cambodia's sovereignty as an independent nation, not subject to US law," according to the letter seen by Fresh News on Friday (Sep 13).
“The sanctions constitute a violation of human rights and personal freedoms, damaging the honor and dignity of Ly Yong Phat, who has significantly contributed to infrastructure development, job creation, and the betterment of Cambodians’ lives.
The CPP firmly rejects the U.S. Department of the Treasury's decision, which undermines the principles of state-to-state relations grounded in international law, particularly the respect for sovereignty, independence, and non-interference in domestic affairs.
The CPP calls on the US Department of the Treasury to reconsider this unjust decision and to lift the sanctions imposed on Ly Yong Phat and all of his business interests."
