Phnom Penh (FN), Sep. 4 – Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his satisfaction with the good relations and cooperation in multiple fields between Cambodia and Thailand, especially the good neighbourliness.
Samdech Techo received a farewell call by outgoing Thai Ambassador to Cambodia, Cherdkiat Atthakor on Tuesday (Sep. 3) at the Senate.
Cherdkiat Atthakor informed Samdech Techo that during his nearly two-year tenure, he worked to strengthen relations based on mutual understanding and trust for the benefit of two countries and peoples. The relations elevated to a strategic partnership in February 2024, during the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet's official visit to Thailand.
The ambassador expressed his pleasure with the significant expansion of trade relations between the two countries and hoped that relations in all fields will continue to grow in the future.
He also informed Samdech Techo that Thailand has become the sixth largest investor in Cambodia and that the number of Thai tourists ranks first. He hoped that Thai tourists will continue to visit Cambodia, particularly Siem Reap. He also mentioned the progress in education, noting that the Royal Government of Thailand has initiated the construction of training facilities at Kampong Chheu Teal Center in Kampong Thom Province and in Kampong Speu Province.
In turn, Samdech Techo expressed his pleasure at the growing ties between Cambodia and Thailand and thanked the Ambassador for facilitating the visits of the former Thai prime minister to Cambodia and for arranging Cambodian prime minister visit to Thailand, which elevated ties to a strategic partnership.
Samdech Techo noted that Cambodia and Thailand are neighbouring countries with similar cultures and traditions. He also thanked Thailand for becoming an important investment partner in Cambodia. Samdech Techo emphasized the need for greater people-to-people exchanges between the two countries to allow citizens to visit, explore, and seek medical treatment. He highlighted that Thailand has become a key reference for neighbouring countries such as Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia for affordable medical services. Thailand has many hospitals along the Cambodian border. The Senate president recommended further enhancing this connection.
In addition, Samdech Techo expressed his satisfaction with the increased trade volume between the two countries, noting that Cambodian farmers along the border now have opportunities to sell agricultural products to Thailand. He also thanked the Thai government for making it easier and more convenient for Cambodian workers to work in Thailand, stating that they not only earn wages but also gain techniques and skills that can be applied when they return to Cambodia.
Samdech Techo also expressed his gratitude to the Royal Government of Thailand for its commitment to human resource development and thanked Princess Sirindhorn for establishing the Kampong Chheu Teal Institute of Technology in Kampong Thom and the Institute of Technology in Kampong Speu, as well as for her annual scholarships, which have contributed to the development of many human resources in Cambodia.
Samdech Techo also thanked the Thai boxers for participating in a series of sports competitions in Cambodia.
Lastly, beside economic sector, the two countries must work together to maintain a culture of good cooperation in international forums such as ACMECS, the Mekong, ASEAN, and RCEP. Samdech Techo also conveyed greetings through the ambassador to the new Thai prime minister as well.
