Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 22 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that between 2020 and 2024, the Royal Government has launched and implemented the cash subsidy program benefiting approximately 700,000 poor and vulnerable families, equivalent to 2.8 million people, with a total value of nearly USD 1.4 billion.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Aug. 22) on the occasion of the 1st Anniversary of the Royal Government of the 7th Legislature of the National Assembly of Cambodia.

"Between 2020 and 2024, the Royal Government launched and implemented a cash support program for poor and vulnerable families as part of the response to COVID19. This program provided subsidies to families holding Type 1 and Type 2 equity cards, and to family members aged 60 or older, those with disabilities, individuals who are HIV positive, and children under 5 years old. A total of 700,000 families, equal to 2.8 million people, benefited from the program, which was funded with nearly USD 1.4 billion," the premier underscored.

National Social Assistance Program comprises two types:

Type 1: The National Social Assistance Program in the family package includes a cash support program for pregnant women and children under 2 years old, scholarships for impoverished students in primary and secondary education, cash support for people with disabilities, and financial assistance for individuals aged 60 years and older.

Type 2: Social protection in response to disasters encompasses natural disasters (including hurricanes, floods), public health crises, and macroeconomic and financial crises.
