Kandal (FN), Aug. 5 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that the Funan Techo Canal Project does not compromise the kingdom’s territory but instead brings great benefits to the nation.
The premier spoke on Monday (Aug. 5) during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Funan Techo Canal.
"Although most citizens understand the value of this canal project, some are concerned about losing Cambodia's territory and sovereignty to foreigners. Because of these concerns, we need to respond clearly. Addressing these concerns and doubts is crucial, as we must construct this project at any cost. If we do not, we risk losing not only the strengthening of our sovereignty and economic potential but also the trust and unity of the nation,” the premier underscored.
Samdech Thipadei added that the Funan Techo Canal Project does not result in a loss of territory, as it is located within Cambodia's borders, which have already been demarcated and have a population of millions.
Additionally, the implementation of this canal project is operated under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, meaning it is not funded by foreign loans but by private company investment. He added that the Funan Techo Canal Project is not 100% foreign investment; a local Cambodian company holds a 51% stake.
The Funan Techo Canal project aims to connect waterways between rivers and the sea of Cambodia, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. It spans approximately 180 kilometers. The project is expected to cost about USD 1.7 billion and has been studied in detail.
