Kandal (FN), Aug. 5 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that the construction of the Funan Techo Canal aligns with the vision of the Funan Empire's leaders.
The premier spoke on Monday (Aug. 5) during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Funan Techo Canal.
"The Funan Empire, the first empire of Cambodia since the first century according to Chinese records, was prosperous in the South of China. The construction of the Funan Techo Canal, which aims to boost agriculture, trade, industry, and logistics, reflects the vision of our Cambodian ancestors more than 2,000 years ago," the premier underscored.
According to historical documents from the kingdom of Funan, whose capital was Angkor Borei, up to five canals were built. These canals connected key areas within the country and extended to neighboring countries in the West and East. One canal in Angkor Borei, named Canal 5, was 90 kilometers long and connected Angkor Borei to Ou Keo port, facilitating trade with the West, including the Roman Empire and India.
Separately, another canal connected Angkor Borei to the Bassac River, enabling trade with the East, including China. Additionally, three other canals served as main arteries, connecting different parts of the country to transport agricultural goods for logistics.
Samdech Thipadei emphasized that the construction of the Funan Techo Canal is modeled on the vision of the Khmer ancestors. It connects Phnom Penh to the deep-sea port in Sihanoukville, facilitating global connections. While the port of Sihanoukville is already connected to the world, historical canals make it easier to connect directly by waterway.
On the occasion, the premier added that the Funan Techo Canal will not only serve international trade but also enhance Cambodia's irrigation system, promoting agriculture in the Southwestern part of Cambodia.
