Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 2 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the border demarcation between Cambodia and Viet Nam in Mondulkiri, Ratanakkiri, and Kratie, marked by hundreds of posts, aims to protect Cambodia's territorial integrity and demonstrates the Royal Government's commitment to safeguarding its territory.
The premier spoke on Friday (Aug. 2) during his gala dinner with the Cambodian Oknha Association and the Housing Development Association of Cambodia.
Before 2007, Cambodia's four provinces lacked border posts with Viet Nam, with posts only present from Kampot to Kampong Cham. However, to demonstrate a commitment to protecting territorial integrity, Cambodia began establishing border posts in 2007 to clearly demarcate the border with Viet Nam.
Samdech Thipadei highlighted that over the past 25 years, more than 150 border posts have been erected in Kratie province from 2006 to 2018, including 11 main posts and 144 additional ones. In Mondulkiri province, from 2007 to 2018, 35 main posts, 375 additional posts, and 11 signposts were established. In Ratanakkiri province, 40 main posts, 153 additional posts, and 4 signposts were set up.
“The hundreds of pillars we've erected demonstrate our goodwill and clearly indicate our intent to define our country's borders, contrary to what some may think that we are ceding these provinces to our neighbouring countries. Please understand and trust that we are doing this to secure our land for the long-term future, making it easier to protect our territory."
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underscored that to safeguard Cambodia's territorial integrity and strengthen borders with neighbouring countries, the Royal Government has not only established border posts but also implemented policies to promote sustainable development in border areas. Over the past 25 years, Cambodia has not only connected national roads to Ratanakkiri and Mondulkiri but also built hundreds of kilometres of border roads, with plans to extend this network further until the Dragon Tail area.
Cambodia and Viet Nam share a land border of about 1,270 km and so far, the two countries have set up 84% of the border posts.
