Phnom Penh (FN), Jul. 26 – This summer, 10,500 athletes will compete at the Paris Olympics. The US, with 2,959 medals, leads the former USSR's 1,204 medals. Team US has won 827 medals in track and field and 578 in swimming, receiving $54.1 million and $49.2 million in funding from 2003-2019, respectively.
The USSR, competing from 1952-1991, led in 13 out of 18 Olympics during its existence, using state-run programs to showcase ideological dominance. Despite a 30-year absence, China ranks fifth in Olympic medals, excelling in gymnastics, diving, and badminton.
European countries, including Germany, Great Britain, and France, dominate the top 20 in combined Olympic medals. Conversely, over 60 countries, such as Bolivia and Bangladesh, have yet to win an Olympic medal.
