Phnom Penh (FN), Jul. 22 – Under Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) for Operational Support Atul Khare praised Cambodia's rapid development, speaking during a courtesy call on Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Monday (Jul. 22) at the Peace Palace.

On that occasion, Atul Khare commended Cambodia's achievements and regarded it as a model country that has transitioned from receiving UN peacekeeping forces to contributing its own forces to international peacekeeping missions. Cambodia has participated in peacekeeping, demining, and infrastructure construction with the support of the UN. Additionally, Cambodia has provided demining training to several countries and also host the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Centre.

In addition, the under secretary general of the UN expressed his support for Cambodia's upcoming role as host of the 5th Review Meeting of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production, and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and Destruction of Mines (Ottawa Convention) in November 2024. He praised Cambodia's rapid development and congratulated the country on its progress towards graduating the LDC status.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei thanked the UN for its contributions to Cambodia's socio-economic development and for its continued support of Cambodia's peacekeeping forces. The prime minister affirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia's commitment to continue sending Cambodian peacekeepers to participate in UN peacekeeping and humanitarian demining missions.

Samdech Thipadei also underlined Cambodia's readiness to host the UN-ROK-Cambodia Triangular Partnership at the end of 2024 and the UN-Japan-Cambodia Triangular Partnership in early 2025.
