Siem Reap (FN), Jul. 18 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra to investigate and take decisive action against journalists engaged in unethical practices for personal gain, including revoking licenses and blacklisting them.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Jul. 18) during a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of Samdech Pin Sem Museum in Siem Reap province.
Samdech Thipadei noted with concern that some journalists have misused their profession to extort money or engage in unethical behaviours, tarnishing the integrity of journalism.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, "I urge everyone to uphold ethics in journalism. I ask Neth Pheaktra to meticulously address these issues so that a few individuals do not undermine the honour of thousands of journalists. Those who misuse their license and oppress others will have their credentials revoked and be barred from practicing journalism.”
On the occasion, the premier called on journalists to adhere to ethical standards and publish accurate information, whether positive or negative, to facilitate effective governance by the Royal Government.
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei urged responsible use of social media. He cautioned against spreading false information for political gain and underlined the harmful societal impact of misinformation, a concern shared globally including in Europe, the United States, Canada, and Spain.
