Siem Reap (FN), Jul. 18 – Cambodian Prime Minister advised the Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia Chea Serey to urgently collaborate with all private banks to offering the exchange of slightly torn or stained US dollar notes for free of charge.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Jul. 18) during a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of Samdech Pin Sem Museum in Siem Reap province.
Samdech Thipadei mentioned that removing these conditions is necessary to avoid negatively affecting the emotions of tourists visiting Cambodia. Although this issue might seem minor, it can cause significant problems.
"Last night, I called the Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia to urgently address the issue of damaged US dollars with commercial and private banks. While it is difficult to accept counterfeit and severely damaged currency, there should be no fee for exchanging slightly torn money. This situation burdens sellers, as banks reduce interest, leading sellers to charge customers and causing complaints. It complicates spending money. I urge you to work with the banks to ease this condition,” the premier underscored.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei pointed out that if the National Bank cannot coordinate with private banks, he will address the issue directly with them. He also instructed the National Bank of Cambodia to establish a clear standard for using slightly torn dollars to facilitate easier transactions for consumers.
