Phnom Penh (FN), Jul. 16 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that humanity does not need war and condemned the policy of killing people as unacceptable, speaking on Tuesday (Jul. 16) during the groundbreaking ceremony of the ECCC Resource Centre expansion at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).

""The call for document preservation and the future establishment of institutes for sharing and preservation are crucial. The United Nations has designated a day for genocide remembrance in several countries, underscoring the importance of remembering history for humanity's sake,” the premier underlined.

Samdech Thipadei continued, “We must strive to replicate the good aspects of history, while steadfastly remembering and avoiding its bitter lessons, particularly the extremism of mass killings. Any policy that involves such atrocities is unacceptable, a lesson that all Cambodian youth must firmly grasp.”

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that this page of history must not be locked away and forgotten. History is not merely a reminder of past evils or negativity but a testament to the suffering endured by Cambodia and the world—suffering that humanity must strive never to repeat. Organising, compiling, and researching is essential, but it must be based on real documents.

Samdech Thipadei added that the documents in the ECCC archives are the source of all original documents and recommended that digital archives be increased to prevent loss, as the documents cannot be returned to the court for another 16 years. Cambodia’s history must not be left isolated but should open opportunities for foreigners to research, especially courts with historical significance.
