Shanghai (FN), Jul. 1 – On 26 June 2024, at the Accelerating Open Gateway in the Era of 5G-Advanced and AI Summit held during MWC Shanghai, industry players like carriers, Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) providers, and consulting agencies discussed how open application programmable interfaces (APIs) will help reshape the telecom industry in the 5G era and explore the latest 5G-A applications. During the summit, Philip Song, Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei Carrier Business Group, explained how Open Gateway will be essential for carriers to pursue experience-driven operations based on diverse 5G-A network capabilities in the mobile AI era, and shared Huawei's overall strategy and practices concerning open APIs.
2024 marks the start of a new era of mobile AI empowered by the commercial launch of 5G-A and rapid advances in AI. According to Song, significant changes are on the horizon for mobile terminals, content production, and interaction patterns. Facing such changes, diversified capabilities are expected from 5G-A networks, and such diversification will naturally push carriers to opt for experience-oriented operations. By integrating AI, 5G-A networks will be more capable of fulfilling this requirement. The telecom foundation model has already been introduced to make 5G-A networks more intelligent so that differentiated capabilities can be provided on demand.
Open Gateway defines unified standards and billing modes as well as a unified global ecosystem within an interoperable framework to enable experience-driven operations based on diverse network capabilities. Both carriers' platforms and third-party operations platforms can be leveraged to monetize packages designed based on user layers, service levels, and scenario segments. Open Gateway will become a new engine for 5G-A experience-oriented operations and spur the creation of new business models.
Open Gateway is fast developing, and Huawei has shared a number of open API applications in conjunction with carrier partners. One example of this is the service appointment API for toC and toB mobile live-streaming. This service provides guaranteed experience for live-streamers according to their individual requirements. For carriers, this provides an opportunity to accelerate differentiated operations. Another feature that is favored by insurance companies is the New Calling API, which integrates HD video, interactive data, content sharing, and AR marking into loss assessment, thus shortening the process from 2 hours to just 10 minutes. This translates into significant cost savings for insurance companies and revenue growth for carriers.
As a channel partner of GSMA Open Gateway, Huawei will continue to invest in the R&D of network APIs, specifically by exploring new services, accelerating the development of incumbent services like fixed wireless access (FWA), and improving O&M efficiency to enable efficient scheduling of network resources, differentiated experience assurance, and intelligent O&M. At the same time, Huawei will work with the CAMARA community to help global carriers continuously plan and deploy new service APIs.
Song concluded his speech by calling on industry players around the world to increase cooperation and promote the commercial application of open network capabilities. "Huawei is determined to help carriers build 5G-A networks that allow them to maximize AI to build new businesses, experiences, and a more intelligent world."
MWC Shanghai 2024 held from 26-28 June in Shanghai, China. During the event, Huawei will showcase its latest products and solutions at stands E10 and E50 in Hall N1 of Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC).
2024 will see the commercial launch of 5.5G, while F5.5G, marked by gigabit optical networks, is already underway. Synergy across networks, cloud, and intelligence is diversifying user experience and making intelligent applications pervasive. Together with global operators, industry professionals, and opinion leaders, we dive into topics such as amplifying 5G's success in the 5.5G era, tapping the potential to grow operator revenues, and speeding up towards an intelligent world.
