Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 17 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reminded the public that while there had been an initiative to ban the import of old cars into the country, Samdech rejected it. The government has no policy to prohibit people from buying more cars and is only striving to solve transportation problems to avoid congestion.
The premier spoke on Monday morning (Jun. 17) during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Twin Flyovers at the Intersection of Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard and National Road No.2.
Samdech Thipadei underlined, "We considered imposing an age limit on car imports, but instead, we should focus on strengthening our vehicle inspection system. There were proposals to ban the import of cars over ten years old by 2030 and to limit imports to cars under five years old to ensure environmental safety. I say we should remove those restrictions."
Samdech Thipadei continued, "I understand the environmental concerns. We don't want to import old cars that are technically problematic and could cause accidents. Instead of setting a year limit, we should strengthen technical inspections to ensure safety and environmental standards."
The Royal Government encourages local car manufacturers and supports competition in importing used cars to ensure affordable prices for the public.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet also confirmed that there is no ban on the number of cars each family can own in Cambodia. He called on the private sector to invest more in the parking system, especially for luxury cars, in collaboration with the Phnom Penh administration, as the city is currently facing a shortage of parking spaces.
