Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 12 – Russian Ambassador to Cambodia Anatoly Borovik stated that over the 68 years of Russia-Cambodia diplomatic relations, friendship and mutual trust have consistently been at the heart of progressive bilateral ties. He pledged to further expand trade, economic, and business connections.

The ambassador addressed the Russia Day state reception held at the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra on Tuesday (Jun. 11). The event was attended by prominent Cambodian officials, including Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, executive and legislative bodies, cultural, business and academic circles, diplomatic corps, and the medias.

“Russia has always been and remains a faithful ally of developing countries, a reliable advocate of the peoples of the world in their fight against colonial yoke. To this day, we stand for equity, sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, and oppose neocolonial practices of the self-proclaimed group of “the chosen ones” against the World Majority,” the ambassador said.

“Nowadays Russia is expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific region and strengthening relations with the nations of Southeast Asia, including the Kingdom of Cambodia. Rich historical experience, good traditions and constructive approach will help us to find new opportunities of expanding practical cooperation and mutually beneficial exchanges in the interests of the peoples of Russia and Cambodia,” he underscored.

In the 1980s, the former Soviet Union played a crucial role in Cambodia's reconstruction after its liberation from the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime. The Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital and the Institute of Technology serve as its reminder, continuing their mission for the people of Cambodia.

According to the ambassador, Cambodia has been successfully fulfilling its duties as the ASEAN Country-Coordinator for the Russia-ASEAN Strategic Dialogue Partnership, with its 5th Anniversary celebrated in autumn 2023. Last February, the Russia-ASEAN Digital Partnership was established, paving the way for strengthening cooperation in innovations and technologies.

Russia Day is a symbol of solidarity of the Russian people. It signifies their common commitment to traditions and moral guidelines, respect for the glorious heritage of their ancestors, the continuity of generations and epochs. The day of adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty on 12 June 1990 marked the beginning of the fundamental changes in Russia. While preserving its deep historical, scientific and cultural heritage and rich resources, Russia serves as a “bridge” between Europe and Asia, incorporates the best traditions of the peoples that jointly are moving toward the progress and prosperity.
