Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 7 – Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen announced that Cambodia would be making a grave mistake by attending the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland on June 15, 2024 without the presence of a key participant, Russia.

In an exclusive interview with Fresh News CEO Lim Chea Vutha earlier on Friday (Jun. 7), Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated, "Attending the Ukraine Peace Summit without Russia's presence would be a serious mistake and an insult to Cambodia's foreign policy."

Samdech Techo Hun Sen, added, "Cambodia's decision not to attend the Global Peace Summit is our sovereign right. China has not prevented Cambodia from participating, nor has it exerted any pressure on us."

"Non-participation by Cambodia will also reflect a significant mistake made by political analysts or leaders who believe China is preventing Cambodia from attending the summit. I must reaffirm that even if China wanted to hinder Cambodia from joining, it is impossible to do so,” Samdech Techo Hun Sen underlined.

He continued, "What Cambodia notes and asks is that what are the expected outcomes of this summit? If the summit continues to condemn a key party Russia and without inviting Russia to address the issues. Does it make sense for Cambodia to attend, while it would increase hostility?"

According to foreign media reports, more than 100 world leaders have been invited to attend the Ukraine Peace Summit, including several European countries, and the United States. Russia has not been invited, while China confirmed its absence.

Some Southeast Asian countries have already confirmed their participation: Timor-Leste, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. However, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Viet Nam, Brunei and Laos have not yet confirmed.
