Phnom Penh (FN), May 22 – Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen recalled his ridicule of foreigners, stating that when the Khmer Rouge regime was strong, no foreigner stepped forward to stop recognising this regime at the United Nations. Only when the Khmer Rouge regime weakened did they cease recognition.

Samdech Techo spoke on Wednesday (May 22) at the closing of the conference on the “Future of Cambodia Without Genocide” at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).

Samdech Techo underlined, "When the Khmer Rouge was powerful, no one addressed the issues related to the Khmer Rouge trial or stopped recognising their seat at the United Nations. It was only after the regime weakened that actions were taken."

Despite the painful history and experiences endured by the Cambodian people, Samdech Techo Hun Sen urged certain foreign entities to acknowledge their past errors in Cambodia, particularly when they backed the Khmer Rouge's seat at the United Nations. This support demonstrated a lack of justice and contributed to the suffering and loss of life during that period.

Samdech Techo recalled that the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk served as the head of state until 1970, when representation was transferred to Lon Nol. Despite Lon Nol losing control of less than 10 percent of the territory later on, UN seats were still reserved for him under the pretext that he occupied the capital, even though about 90 percent of the territory was under the State of Cambodia (SOC). Samdech Techo underlined that such decisions were driven by foreign interests rather than justice.
