Phnom Penh (FN), May 21 – The United Nations Special Adviser on Genocide Prevention Alice Wairimu Nderitu regarded the successful trial of the Khmer Rouge leaders of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and the prevention of genocide in Cambodia as a valuable lesson for other nations.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet received a courtesy call by Alice Wairimu Nderitu on Tuesday morning (May 21) at the Peace Palace.

Alice Wairimu Nderitu briefed Samdech Thipadei on her past missions in preventing and avoiding genocide in various countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Rwanda.

Taking this occasion, she highlighted the main purpose of her mission in Cambodia is to attend in a conference on “Future of Cambodia Without Genocide: Prevention and Response Through Education and Health Care”.

The UN special adviser also praised the successful cooperation between the ECCC and the UN, particularly in raising awareness about genocide education among youth and students through training in public and private institutions, from general education to university level nationwide.

Alice Wairimu Nderitu also lauded Cambodia's remarkable success in organising the ECCC process. She also informed Samdech Thipadei that Cambodia's lessons and experiences should be shared globally, and the continuation of cooperation between the UN and the Royal Government on the implementation of Home Grown Project.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei expressed his pleasure to meet with the special adviser and thanked her for her interest in Cambodia's success in educating and promoting genocide awareness.

The premier mentioned the importance of educating the next generation about the genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge regime to prevent the recurrence of such atrocities in Cambodian society.

In addition, Premier Hun Manet pointed out that the Royal Government plans to establish an institute to compile and manage documents and a research center to share knowledge and distribute information about genocide. This initiative aims to educate the next generation, scholars, and the general public about genocide and the successful processes of the ECCC.

Regarding the cooperation on the Home Grown Project, Samdech Thipadei encouraged continued collaboration between UN representatives and relevant ministries and institutions of the Royal Government to ensure the successful implementation of this project.
