Sihanoukville (FN), May 1 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet advised the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to explain the case of the Kampot International Tourism Port, which has been criticised for having shallow water levels, making it impossible for ships to enter and exit.

The premier spoke on Wednesday (May 1) during his meeting with workers at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.

"Some people are wondering why the port, which has already been built, is not operational. Soon, the Ministry of Public Works will clarify the concern because each port is not developed by chance. For example, the ADB port (Kampot International Tourism Port) was studied by the ADB, and we need to ensure its operation. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport, along with relevant ministries and institutions, should provide explanations,” the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei added, "Most citizens are unaware. They only hear one side of the story while we remain silent. Thus, Sun Chanthol should explain because he understands the whole case and was previously responsible for it. He needs to cooperate with Minister Peng Ponea to clarify the situation.”

The construction of the Kampot International Tourism Port is financed by the ADB, as part of the tourism infrastructure development project for inclusive growth in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
