Sihanoukville (FN), May 1 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Mant pushed for upgrading the existing railway system, speaking on Wednesday (May 1) during his meeting with workers at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.

"Don't worry about high-speed trains. Instead, let's focus on enhancing our current railways to facilitate the efficient transportation of both people and goods,” said the premier.

According to Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Cambodia operates two railway lines: one in the north, stretching from Phnom Penh to Poipet, and another in the south, running from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei expressed optimism regarding the high-speed train carriages purchased by the Royal Railway Company of Neak Oknha Kith Meng, believing them to offer a convenient and comfortable experience for passengers.

The premier stated that rail transport currently comprises only 6-7% of cargo shipments at the port, significantly less than container shipments. He added the need to bolster road freight transport infrastructure.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei directed the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to promptly address any safety concerns. Additionally, he urged travellers to diligently adhere to traffic laws for their own safety and the well-being of others.

The Royal Railway of Cambodia has acquired a KiHa 183 series train with 11 carriages, which recently arrived at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port on 27 April 2024.
