Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 28 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the Funan Techo canal project is not exclusively for the benefit of the "Hun" family but aims to enhance the welfare of all Cambodians.

The premier spoke on Sunday (Apr. 28) during his meeting with more than 5,000 representatives of informal economy at OCIC, Phnom Penh.

Samdech Thipadei expressed gratitude to the Cambodian people, both domestically and internationally, for sending numerous messages of support for the Funan Techo canal project in Cambodia. Samdech Thipadei affirmed commitment to advancing Samdech Techo's vision of realising the Funan Techo canal.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, "Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated that the Funan Techo canal project is not solely for the benefit of the "Hun" family but aims to enhance the welfare of all Cambodians. The "Hun" family is simply one of the contributors to make this vision a success.”

The construction of the Funan Techo canal carries historical significance and leadership responsibility, hence extensive studies have been conducted to assess its impacts. According to the 1995 Mekong Agreement, the digging of the Funan Techo canal does not necessitate Cambodia to seek approval from other countries; only notifying and providing detail information to the Joint Committee of the Mekong River Commission is required.

Samdech Thipadei noted that while many countries are engaged in constructing canals and dams, there seems to be a disproportionate focus on Cambodia. Nevertheless, no obstacles would deter the construction of the Funan Techo canal project. Samdech Thipadei affirmed that the project has undergone thorough study for approximately 26 months.

However, this canal project has recently faced backlash from certain Vietnamese research groups, accusing it of serving China's military interests. Samdech Thipadei also responded to the criticism from traitor Sam Rainsy, questioning his intentions and motives against the Funan Techo canal project, akin to the Vietnamese researchers' allegations. He urged Rainsy to prioritise national interests.

Please be informed that Funan Techo Canal Project aims to connect waterways between rivers to the sea of Cambodia, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. It is about 180 kilometres long. The project is expected to cost about USD 1.7 billion and has been studied in detail.
