Takeo (FN), Apr. 11 – In response to allegations by Vietnamese researchers suggesting that the Funan Techo Canal could facilitate a deeper Chinese military presence in Cambodian territory, Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that Cambodian law prohibits the presence of foreign troops on its soil.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Apr. 11) during an inauguration of Kirisu Dairy Farm in Takeo province.

The premier's statement came after the publication of a research article written by the Oriental Research Development Institute of Viet Nam, alleging that the Funan Techo Canal Project not only serves the Cambodian economy and society, but also China's military. Vietnamese researchers also accused the canal project of seriously affecting the environment, especially the Mekong River.

Samdech Thipadei asserted that the construction of the Funan Techo Canal was primarily for economic purposes, not to serve foreign military interests. He added that the canal project underwent thorough examination by 40 national and international experts, ensuring compliance with international law concerning the Mekong River and implementing technologies to prevent its adverse environmental effects.

"First and foremost, the Cambodian Constitution prohibits the establishment of foreign military bases on its soil, and Cambodia has no ambition or ideology and no courage to violate its own constitution. We adamantly refuse any foreign troop presence within our borders. Secondly, we firmly reject any exploitation of our nation as a launchpad for aggression against any other country,” Samdech Thipadei underlined.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei added that Cambodia pursues peaceful relations with all nations and has no policy of making enemies, only of fostering friendships.
