Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 9 – Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet encouraged people to have more children to avoid the risk of future labour shortages, speaking on Tuesday (Apr. 9) during the closing 2023 annual meeting of the Ministry of Planning at the ministry.
“By 2050, the elderly will outnumber the younger generations. With a shrinking birth rate, our current middle-aged population faces a looming imbalance in manpower. Our neighbours are grappling with similar challenges,” the premier underlined.
Samdech Thipadei continued, "Although census data showed that Cambodia will not face labour shortages by 2050, we are seeing signs of increased distance between the elderly and the working-age population. A declining birth rate could amplify these challenges.”
On the occasion, Premier Hun Manet also reiterated that the Royal Government of Cambodia’s National Population Policy 2016-2030 respects and supports the right of all couples and individuals to have the basic right to decide freely and responsibly on the number and spacing of their children and to have access to the information, education, services and means to do so.
