Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 2 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced the selection of 50 primary schools to enhance education quality by adding two hours of study time.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Mar. 2) during the closing 2023 annual meeting of the Ministry of Education at Institute of Technology of Cambodia.

"Currently, we have the National Committee to organise the implementation of the 50 schools in the initial phase this year, focusing on primary schools [...], the establishment of new generation schools and model schools, and normal schools. These are not in competition," the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said that this implementation is a model project. Next year, it will be divided into a single model school. He continued that the trial of this program has one National Committee as a transitional stage.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei mentioned that the foundation must be strengthened from kindergarten to high school and should acknowledge what should be done first.

Premier Hun Manet mentioned that if the 1st to 6th grades have a solid foundation, it will provide convenience to teachers in teaching the 7th to 12th grades.

In the academic year 2023-2024, there are 19,341 general education and kindergarten schools, of which 8,891 kindergartens, 8,252 primary schools (854 private schools), 1,341 secondary schools (99 private schools) and 897 high schools (316 private schools).
