Pursat (FN), Mar. 31 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet encouraged the joint organization of numerous traditional Khmer games during the Khmer New Year celebrations and proposed granting rewards to provinces that do not experience traffic accidents during the festivities.
The premier spoke on Sunday morning (Mar. 31) at the inauguration of Preah Botum Stupa at Mony Ratanaream Pagoda in Pursat province.
Samdech Thipadei called for active participation of people, especially the youth, in celebrating the New Year. He urged capital-provincial governors and district officials to arrange entertainment programs gradually and encouraged pagodas to organize religious ceremonies.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet encouraged, "Please organize as many traditional games as possible, set up the venue, and arrange materials for games like Bos Angkunh and Chhoung. I have observed Chhoung being organized in Phnom Penh and some provinces. Let's put a lot of effort into this, so our people, especially children, can engage in our cultural traditions more actively. Let's encourage the playing of more traditional games, both within our communities and beyond."
Reflecting on his visit to Laos, Prime Minister Hun Manet noted that the Cambodian Embassy there had successfully organized traditional Khmer games, inviting trainees and Cambodian residents in Laos to join in the festivities, fostering a joyful atmosphere.
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also advised young participants to celebrate responsibly, refraining from engaging in activities that may harm others, particularly highlighting the dangers of drunk driving.
Regarding traffic safety, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed that a New Year celebration without any traffic accidents would be ideal. "And if any province manages to avoid a traffic accident, there will be a reward from the Prime Minister," Samdech Thipadei underscored.
In addition, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet cautioned against engaging in activities that disrespect women during the New Year celebrations. He underscored the importance of mutual respect, love, and understanding among participants, urging them to treat each other as siblings and to exhibit patience and tolerance in their interactions.
Khmer New Year will be celebrated from 13 April to 16 April 2024, spanning four days from Sunday to Tuesday.
