Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 26 – Cambodian Delegate Minister Jean François Tan underscored the significance of importing electricity from Laos, citing several key objectives.

Delegate Minister Jean François Tan spoke during the press conference on Tuesday (Mar. 26) after Samdech Thipadei concluded his visit to Lao PDR.

Cambodia maintains ambitions to attain energy independence. Presently, the country meets approximately 75 percent of its electricity demand through domestic production, while the remaining 25 percent is imported from Laos, Viet Nam, and Thailand.

Jean François Tan underscored, "The import of electricity from Laos serves the purpose of acquiring affordable electricity to reduce domestic costs and benefits the natural environment by avoiding additional hydropower."

At the same time, Yim Viseth, President of the Electricity Authority of Cambodia, noted that importing electricity from abroad is essential for maintaining network stability. However, he stated that Cambodia already possesses sufficient capacity to generate electricity for domestic consumption independently.
