Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 19 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet outlined that COVID19 pandemic reflected the strengths and weaknesses of Cambodia's health sector, speaking on Tuesday (Mar. 19) during the closing 2023 annual meeting of the Ministry of Health at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.
"I was involved in that [COVID19] situation, particularly in the stage of serious illness. Our doctors were capable of rescuing many citizens. Unfortunately, we could not save 100%. However, the ability, the hard work, and the dedication of the [doctors] have demonstrated our practical ability," the premier underscored.
"This is the national pride and pride for the White Army. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation once again," the premier continued.
Regarding the strengths, Samdech Thipadei mentioned that the COVID19 outbreak reflected the actual capabilities of Cambodian doctors and health workers nationwide.
As for the weakness, Premier Hun Manet added that the COVID19 outbreak also indicated some weaknesses which need to be improved, especially related to human resource development, human resource deployment, equipment and facilities, and transport infrastructure in the health sector.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei continued that with these experiences and challenges, the Royal Government of the seventh mandate has set out key measures to strengthen the health sector in the kingdom.
As of 19 March 2024, Cambodia recorded 139,097 COVID19 cases, of which 136,040 COVID19 patients have so far recovered. The country reported the total fatalities staying at 3,056.
