Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 15 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet highly appreciated the results of the 5th Senate Election held on 25 February 2024, which saw participation from four political parties and recorded a turnout of 99.86 per cent.
The premier spoke on Friday (Mar. 15) during a weekly cabinet meeting at the Peace Palace.
The premier underlined that the election results demonstrated the political maturity and advancement of democracy in Cambodia.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, "The 5th Senate Election was successfully conducted on 25 February 2024, with four parties competing and 99.86 per cent of the provisional voters participating. These results underscored the political maturity and advancement of democracy in Cambodia."
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also extended congratulations on the election's outcome, expressing high appreciation and gratitude to all stakeholders, particularly the National Election Committee (NEC) and local authorities at every level, for their cooperation in ensuring a smooth, free, fair and transparent election.
In the Senate election for the fifth legislative term, the Cambodian People's Party secured 55 seats, while the Khmer Will Party obtained three seats. On the other hand, FUNCINPEC and the Nation Power Party, despite their participation, did not secure any seats.
The Senate of the fifth legislature comprises 62 members, two of whom are appointed by the King, two elected by the National Assembly through a majority vote, and 58 elected via non-universal election, involving members of the parliaments and members of Commune/Sangkat Councils.
