Melbourne (FN), Mar. 5 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that Australia is a popular destination for Cambodian students pursuing higher education opportunities, addressing the Australia-Cambodia Business Forum on Tuesday (Mar. 5) in Melbourne, Australia.

“Australia is a popular destination for Cambodian students pursuing higher education opportunities. The number of Cambodian students studying in Australian universities has grown significantly. This is not just about degrees; it is about building understanding across generations,” Samdech Thipadei underlined.

Growing connections between our people through education, tourism and culture further refine our relationship foundation, the premier added.

Prime Minister Hun Manet continued, the vibrant Cambodian-Australian community serves as a bridge and plays a crucial role in strengthening the bonds between our nations. According to the Australia 2021 Census, over 57,000 people of Cambodian origin call Australia home. The second generation of Cambodian-Australians are integrated into mainstream Australian society while being appreciative of their cultural roots. Their stories are one of overcoming obstacles, building a better life, and fostering a vibrant legacy.

According to Samdech Thipadei, Australia and Cambodia enjoy a partnership built on a strong historical foundation. Our formal diplomatic relations began in 1952, demonstrating Australia’s early recognition of Cambodia’s independence. Over the past seven decades, Australia has always been instrumental in Cambodia’s socio-economic development through its pivotal role in the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements, trade and investment, as well as continuous assistance in many fields such as education, agriculture, infrastructure, demining and health.
