Melbourne (FN), Mar. 3 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet unveiled that in a bid to stay competitive on the global stage, Cambodia aims to pioneer the construction of underwater roads and bridges.
The premier spoke on Sunday (Mar. 3) during his meeting with Cambodians in Australia and New Zealand.
This visionary initiative comes on the heels of the successful implementation of numerous large bridges spanning rivers and tributaries, strategically enhancing travel and facilitating seamless transportation of goods across the country, the premier added.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei recalled his time studying in the United States, where he shared two heartfelt experiences that stirred a deep sense of longing for his homeland. The first was the sight of expansive supermarkets, and the second was the marvel of vast highways. These stories underscored the contrast between the developed infrastructure abroad and Cambodia's historical challenges of crisis, war, and national division.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said: "We will build a bridge from the Old Market to Arey Ksat. They [the experts] are studying the underwater roads and bridges. We have built the infrastructures on land; therefore, we must now think about building them underwater. It must be connected.”
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet revealed ongoing government negotiations for the construction of Road 50C, linking Kampong Chhnang to Kampong Thom and connecting with a remarkable 3 km-plus bridge. The anticipated completion of this road infrastructure promises to significantly ease travel for residents in Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Thom, further enhancing accessibility and fostering regional connectivity.
Samdech Hun Manet underlined that the expansion of this infrastructure is not merely about building roads but also includes the establishment of special economic zones and versatile ports. These developments have the potential to generate tens of thousands of employment opportunities, offering a significant boost to the local workforce. By actively promoting the construction of this road, the government aims to not only spur national economic growth but also address unemployment concerns and provide a sustainable source of income, ultimately contributing to the prosperity of the people.
After achieving a complete peace, the Royal Government of Cambodia has been paying attention to the development of various infrastructure systems such as: roads, railways, airways, bridges, rivers, flyovers and ports to ensure transportation and ease people's travel.
