Melbourne (FN), Mar. 3 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed that the Royal Government of Cambodia has no plans to ban people from having children, instead, encourages people to have more children, speaking on Sunday (Mar. 3) during his meeting with Cambodians in Australia and New Zealand.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underscored, "The population in Phnom Penh is now over 2 million, and it may reach 4 million in another 10 years, depending on the birth rate. However, people in the capital are currently having fewer children, so we must encourage them to have more."
The premier added, "Since the 1970s, we have suffered significant losses due to war and genocide. We must play a role in encouraging population growth."
The annual population growth rate decreased from 1.5 per cent between 1998 and 2008 to 1.2 per cent between 2008 and 2019. Cambodia's annual growth rate in the last decade is higher than the average growth rate in Southeast Asia, which is only 1.0 percent.
