Kuala Lumpur (FN), Feb. 27 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim underscored the importance of trade and investment between their two countries as a mean to stimulate the economy.
Both prime ministers held joint press conference on Tuesday (Feb. 27) during Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet’s official visit to Malaysia.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that the bilateral trade between Cambodia and Malaysia shows promising upward trends and there is still untapped potential to further bolster economic partnership. In this regard, Samdech Thipadei invited Malaysia to consider the possibility of establishing a joint trade committee.
Anwawr Ibrahim underscored that Cambodia and Malaysia have huge potential in terms of boosting trade volume, palm oil, and white rice. The trade ministries of both countries will use the joint technical committee platform to address these challenges and find solutions to improve trade and tourism.
The Malaysian premier also added that the customs departments will facilitate the movement of goods and both countries have already started the initiatives discussion of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by both customs and will finalize soon.
In terms of investment, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim noted the rapid pace of progress on talks on food security, collaboration research, investment, halal food industry, renewable energy and high-tech industry including EV and AI and Cambodia and Malaysia should expect more investment from Malaysia into Cambodia and from Cambodia into Malaysia.
Regarding trade and investment, Anwar Ibrahim also welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Bank of Cambodia and Bank Negara Malaysia on Cooperation in Area of Financial Innovation and Payment Systems. He confirmed that Malaysia had already done so with Thailand and China and this cooperation with Cambodia would lessen the burden of only tied to the US dollar.
