Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 27 – During Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet's visit to Malaysia, discussions encompassed not only the promotion of enhanced relations and cooperation but also delved into defence and security matters. Specifically, both nations agreed to bolster economic potential, tourism, and energy connectivity through maritime routes.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet and his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim held a bilateral meeting to discuss diverse dimensions of cooperation on Tuesday (Feb. 27) during the former's official visit to Malaysia. The Malaysian prime minister also conveyed regards and expressed his intention to visit Samdech Techo Hun Sen.
Samdech Thipadei expressed his pleasure at the bilateral meeting and thanked the Malaysian Prime Minister for the warm welcome.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that through the Malaysian prime minister's official visit in March 2023 and the current official visit of Samdech Thipadei, this opportunity will contribute to further deepening the long-standing relationship between Cambodia and Malaysia.
During the meeting, the two counterparts commended the outcomes of bilateral cooperation and exchanged insights on enhancing collaboration across various sectors, including political-security, trade and investment, tourism, labour, halal food industry, ICT and digital technology, and energy security.
During the meeting, the Cambodian and Malaysian leaders also discussed the possibility of expanding direct flights from Malaysia to Cambodia's key tourist destinations, notably Siem Reap. Within the framework of defence and security, Cambodia and Malaysia agreed to bolster cooperation, encompassing human resource training, capacity building, information exchange, and joint exercises.
In the field of energy security, the two sides also agreed to support coordination for the renewable energy transmission project (Laos-Cambodia-Singapore) across the Malaysian seabed. In addition, both sides agreed to consider the possibility of holding a meeting of the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) to be chaired by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries.
The two leaders expressed optimism that the relationship between Cambodia and Malaysia would strengthen further, potentially reaching new heights.
