Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 24 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet clarified that the ongoing modernization of Cambodia's national defence capacity is solely aimed at maintaining peace and stability, speaking on Wednesday (Jan. 24) at the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Cambodian Royal Army Command Headquarters
In the past, Cambodia faced significant criticism from foreign media and the United States regarding the development of the Ream naval base. Allegations surfaced, claiming "Cambodia allows China to set up military bases in the kingdom." The Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence consistently denied these claims.
"Cambodia has no ambition to invade any nation; the enhancement of its defence capabilities is a right that Cambodia, like any other country in the world, possesses. No country is exempt from modernizing its national defence," the premier underscored.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei mentioned that reinforcing the army's capacity is aimed at preserving peace and stability within the country and contributing regionally in the event of situations such as terrorism, which may necessitate Cambodia's involvement.
Reflecting on Cambodia's history of participating in the United Nations peacekeeping missions, Samdech Thipadei highlighted that international competence is crucial. If Cambodian forces were deemed incompetent, the international community would not permit Cambodia's participation.
