Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 23 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the media has played an important role in strengthening democracy based on the rule of law, disseminating accurate information, providing education, contributing to social progress, and showcasing the efforts of the Royal Government.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Jan. 23) during the closing of annual meeting of the Ministry of Information at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.

Samdech Thipadei also underlined that the correct use of information is essential for fostering peace, empowering people in decision-making, and implementing effective measures.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, "The media sector serves as a vital catalyst in creating content and distributing information about society, presenting social realities and practical developments in the process of nation-building and development. In the past, the media sector has played a significant role such as:

1. Strengthening democracy based on the rule of law

2. Disseminating real and timely information

3. Providing educational information and knowledge

4. Serving as a loyal social watchdog

5. Contributing to societal improvement by supplying accurate, comprehensive, and transparent information for the formulation of policies, strategies, and action plans by the Royal Government."

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that over the past five months, he has received and resolved numerous societal issues through information from social media. Samdech Thipdei urged Capital-Provincial Governors to thoroughly grasp information to address problems within their jurisdictions.

The premier also underscored the importance of the ethics and professionalism of journalists in preserving journalistic values. To maintain the integrity of the press, journalists must collaborate to prevent unethical behavior.

Please be informed that according to the current Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra, Cambodia boasts over 2,000 media units and approximately 10,000 journalists.
