Paris (FN), Jan. 19 – The French government welcomed Cambodia's strong commitment to climate change, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through a strategy focused on a clean, green and sustainable environment, according to a joint declaration of the dialogue between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and the French President Emmanuel Macron on 18 January 2024 in Paris, France.
The French side reiterated its readiness to assist Cambodia in its efforts to link rapid economic development to the energy transition. It highlighted the role of the French Development Agency, as shown by three signed agreements for 215 million euros, and French companies.
Samdech Thipadei confirmed that Cambodia is committed to not developing hydropower dams on the Mekong River or coal-fired power plants. Samdech Thipadei also mentioned that Cambodia would support its participation in the Paris Pact for the People and the Planet. The two sides agreed to work together in hosting the United Nations Conference on the Ocean to be held in Nice in 2025.
It should be noted that, in pursuit of becoming a carbon-neutral country, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has outlined a series of environmental policies, which include halting the construction of coal-fired power plants.
