Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 12 – Cambodian President of the National Assembly (NA) Khuon Sudary said that the National Assembly welcomed every European Parliament delegation to enhance parliamentary cooperation for peace and sustainable development.

The NA president received a courtesy call by Member of the European Parliament and First Vice-chairperson of the International Trade Committee Jan Zahradil on Friday (Jan. 12) at the National Assembly.

Jan Zahradil thanked the president for allowing him and his delegation to pay a courtesy call on. He also briefed the objectives of his visit to Cambodia at the invitation of the National Assembly Committee on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Propaganda and Information, and the Asian Vision Institute (AVI) to participate in the exchange of views and dialogues with Cambodian MPs and officials of the National Assembly on Cambodia-European Union (EU) Cooperation.

For her part, Khuon Sudary warmly welcomed the visit of Jan Zahradil to Cambodia, in particular to the National Assembly to participate in the seminar, which is a bridge to strengthen the relationship between the National Assembly of Cambodia and the European Parliament.

Taking this occasion, both sides touched on the good relations between the two countries, with people-to-people ties being deeply emotional.

President Khuon Sudary underscored that Cambodian National Assembly always welcomes the European Parliament delegation to visit to strengthen and expand good relations and cooperation in order to ensure peace, stability, and respect for human rights, democracy and sustainable development by having citizen as the core.

The president underlined that the Cambodia-EU relations and cooperation, which began in 1994 and signed an agreement in 1997. EU is a key humanitarian and trade partner of Cambodia.

During the COVID19 outbreak, the EU offered financial assistance to Cambodia to fight against COVID19 and to mitigate socioeconomic impacts twice, worth 499 million euros.

Both sides underlined that this is a suitable time for Cambodia and the EU to further strengthen the relations and cooperation based on the people's interests. Cambodia just successfully conducted general elections, and the European Parliament will hold elections in June.

In this mandate, Khuon Sudary added that the Royal Government pledged to serve the citizens and the nations with a strong will and clear vision, achieving the vision of becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.
