Koh Kong (FN), Jan. 8 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the victory over the Khmer Rouge Genocidal Regime on 7 January 1979 ended the deadly massacre and saved the lives of millions of people.

The premier presided over the inauguration of “Samdech Techo Hun Sen Koh Yor Bridge” and met with about 11,000 workers in Koh Kong province on Monday (Jan. 8).

Samdech Thipadei underscored, "There are only two questions. First, did the Khmer Rouge kill people? The answer is yes, they did. Second, could the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge Genocidal Regime in 1979 save lives, as the Khmer Rouge had fled and were no longer killing people? It saved the country and our lives. This is the truth. The efforts of the Kampuchean United Front for National Salvation, supported by the Vietnamese Volunteer Army in 1979, put an end to the Khmer Rouge Genocidal Regime's potential for massacring the country, saving millions of our people."

Samdech Thipadei added that in the late 1970s, Cambodia had no alternative but to seek help from Viet Nam, as there was no legal framework for the United Nations to intervene in Cambodia.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that instead of using politics to interpret history, he urged the use of history as a lens to interpret the past and understand the truth.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet stated that we must collectively work to develop the country, maintain peace, and prevent the return of war.

Please be informed that more than 20,000 people gathered to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the January 7 Victory Day over the Khmer Rouge Genocidal Regime on 7 January 2024 under the presidency of Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen.
