Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 28 – Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Chairman of the Supreme Privy Council, uploaded a short video capturing Westerdam's passengers engaging in a celebratory dance upon their return to Cambodia.

The ship had been permitted to dock over three years ago on 13 February 2020, a time when many countries hesitated due to the looming COVID19 pandemic.

Samdech Techo uploaded the video on his social media on Thursday (Dec. 28) prompting reflection on the critical decision to allow the ship to dock.

Samdech Techo also questioned what the conditions on the ship might have been if Cambodia had denied entry, underscoring the paramount importance of the right to life.

Samdech Techo also challenged those who advocate for human rights and democracy. Samdech Techo mentioned that in his perspective, the fundamental right to life takes precedence over any discussion of rights and democracy when survival is at stake.

On 13 February 2020, the MS Westerdam, a cruise ship operated by Holland America Line, was granted permission to dock in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. This decision came at a time when several countries were reluctant to allow the ship to dock due to concerns about the emerging COVID19 pandemic. The passengers and crew aboard the Westerdam were stranded at sea, facing rejections from various ports.

Cambodia's decision to welcome the Westerdam was a crucial humanitarian gesture that provided a safe haven for the passengers and crew. The country's action received international attention, and the passengers' joyous dancing upon their arrival became a symbol of hope during the challenging early days of the global pandemic.
