Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 27 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that Cheung Aek Lake has been transformed from a killing field during the Pol Pot regime into a harmonious and developed area, speaking on Wednesday (Dec. 27) during an inauguration ceremony for Cheung Aek Sewage Treatment Plant in Phnom Penh.

“At least 20,000 people had been brought from Tuol Sleng prison and killed here. It was a graveyard,” the premier added.

In this context, the prime minister conveyed his regret, stating that if Cambodia had not endured war, the lives of 20,000 individuals would have been spared, and they could have undoubtedly contributed as valuable human resources for the country's development.

Samdech Thipadei continued, complete peace and political stability has transformed this graveyard into a vibrant place, an economic hub where the Cambodian and Japanese governments inaugurate the symbolic achievements of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

On the occasion, Premier Hun Manet highlighted the value of peace and also urged people to jointly maintain peace.
