Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 22 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet outlined two formulas related to trade and marketing for Cambodian products, speaking on Friday (Dec. 22) at the closing of annual meeting of the Ministry of Commerce.
The first formula is a product determinant, which means that the product must be unique based on geography and it cannot be produced elsewhere. For example, Kampot pepper products, manufactured under the Geographical indications (GI), cannot be produced in any country other than Kampot province of Cambodia. Therefore, Cambodia needs to strengthen the production of this unique product and then find a market in other countries, the premier explained.
Samdech Thipadei continued, the second formula is to determine market demand, meaning to identify and define the market first and then orient production to meet the market. However, for this approach, other countries may also have similar products.
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei also instructed the Ministry of Commerce to continue research and registration of more geographical indications, goods, and collectives to enhance the quality and branding of Cambodian products in the domestic market. Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce must continue to widely disseminate information and requirements to all producers and stakeholders.
