Sihanoukville (FN), Dec. 22 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reiterated the Royal Government's vision to transform the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port into a regional logistics hub, speaking on Friday (Dec. 22) during a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.

"This has been a goal set by the previous Royal Government under the leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, and we have been working on the construction of this port for several terms. Now, we are entering a new phase. In the future, our efforts will focus on turning the port not only into a container port but also into a regional logistics centre,” the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei reaffirmed the Royal Government's vision to develop this region into a hub that serves the regional and international trade sectors, connecting Cambodia with the international community independently.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei added that Cambodia already has a port, but its capacity and capabilities are limited. Currently, relying on neighbouring ports for goods transfer resulted in losses and decreased competitiveness. However, upon completion of this port, it will offer greater convenience and profitability for Cambodia.

The new deep-water container port - this first phase will cover the construction of a 350-metre-long and 14.5-metre-deep container terminal. The expansion is expected to allow ships of up to 4,000 TEU to call at the terminal. The container port will be able to accommodate container vessels with a capacity of 60,000 tons or 4,000 TEUs, with transit routes in the Asia-Pacific region to the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port and will increase capacity. Total ports reach about 1.25 million TEUs per year. The project is scheduled for completion in 2026.
