Sihanoukville (FN), Dec. 22 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated the vision of developing the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port to become a regional logistics hub, speaking on Friday (Dec. 22) during a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.
To help achieve this goal, the premier requested the Royal Government of Japan to cooperate with Cambodia in formulating a master plan and encourage the Japanese private sector to develop Sihanoukville Port into a regional logistics centre.
"I respectfully request the deputy prime minister and the esteemed ambassador of Japan to Cambodia to actively engage and encourage pertinent Japanese institutions, notably JICA to discuss with Cambodia, led by [deputy prime minister] Sun Chanthol and his team, in crafting a comprehensive master plan for the transformation of Sihanoukville Port into a regional logistics hub,” the premier underlined.
“It is crucial to develop this master plan and enlist the support of the private sector as a pivotal partner in the expansion of capabilities at this strategic location,” the premier added.
Prime Minister Hun Manet stressed the importance of contemplating additional sites for future expansion, underscoring that creating regional logistics centres necessitates a more extensive location to accommodate the growing scope of operations.
It should be noted that Sihanoukville Autonomous Port has been playing an important role in contributing to support the growth and development of the nation. Freight through the port is increasing significantly from year to year, making the port's revenue as well as national revenue increase steadily. In the first 11 months of 2023, the volume of transit goods exceeded 7 million tons, an increase of 11.34 percent.
