Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the careful consideration of environmental impact in the construction of hydropower, road, and bridge projects. The development initiatives prioritize citizens' interests, speaking during the Ministry of Environment's annual meeting on Thursday (Dec. 21).
"We pledged not to construct any dams directly on the Mekong River, regardless of the electricity production potential. It is our duty to do so. While our development addresses current issues and immediate needs, we must also safeguard the environment for future generations," the premier underscored.
Samdech Thipadei continued that with today’s advanced technology, people can do everything, but what is more important is vision and willingness. In particular, the willingness of the Royal Government led by the Cambodian People's Party in every mandate considered environmental matter a very important task.
Within the framework of the Royal Government's policy aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050, multiple policies have been outlined. In 2021, at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), the decision was made to cease licensing new coal-fired power plants to mitigate environmental impact.
Premier Hun Manet further noted that in 2023, Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth led the Cambodian delegation at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, affirming the Royal Government's commitment to environmental initiatives.
