Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed strong support for the Ministry of Environment's initiative to reduce plastic use, aiming to shape citizens’ behaviours towards plastic waste and reduce their daily plastic consumption.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Dec. 21) at the Ministry of Environment's annual meeting.

"I fully endorse the Ministry of Environment's recently launched campaign to reduce plastic use, especially the 'Today I do not use plastic' initiative, which has played a role in shaping citizens’ behaviours towards plastic waste," the premier underscored.

On the occasion, Premier Hun Manet underlined that the surge in consumption inevitably leads to a rise in plastic waste. The widespread global use of plastic, particularly in the unregulated production and consumption of plastic bags, has resulted in severe environmental consequences. This unchecked proliferation has led to plastic pollution, posing threats to human health, biodiversity, and overall environmental well-being. Global research highlights the alarming presence of plastic waste, particularly microplastics, in fish, underscoring the urgent need for concerted global efforts to address and mitigate the pervasive issue of plastic pollution.

Samdech Thipadei highlighted the successful implementation of this initiative, with active participation from various individuals and sectors. Notably, some restaurants have opted for eco-friendly alternatives, such as paper or environmentally friendly materials instead of plastic straws.

During his remarks, the premier also shared his visit to Japan, mentioning a company's interest in exploring the possibility of investing in raising chickens for eggs to produce shirts—an innovative technology that merits attention and learning.
