Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed Minister of Cults and Religions Chay Borin to review certain religious activities and practices in Cambodia that may have undermined religious values.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Dec. 21) at the Ministry of Environment's annual meeting.

Samdech Thipadei noted instances in the past where individuals, impersonating as religious figures or monks, have caused concerns. Recently, there was a woman wearing a veil representing a deity, which undermined religious values, as well as compromised security and social order. Therefore, the premier advised relevant ministers to investigate these cases in order to preserve the values of religion.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei underlined that everyone has the right to practice their religion and the government supports this right. However, if individuals exploit religion as a pretext for engaging in other activities, the Royal Government also has a responsibility to safeguard religious and social values.

"We respect the right to freedom of religion, but we must establish boundaries to uphold the values of religion. I would like the Ministry to consult with all religions, whether it be Buddhism, Islam, or Christianity, big or small,” the premier underscored.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei advised a review of the dissemination of social media, information distribution, and activities in public places. If there is no clear basis for action, it should only be done indoors. However, if there is public promotion with the intention of enticing or engaging in other activities, the ministry must exercise caution.
