Dubai (FN), Dec. 11 – Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth delivered a national statement on behalf of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) on 9 December 2023 to demonstrate Cambodia's strong commitment to international efforts aimed at addressing the climate change challenges.
Minister Eang Sophalleth reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to align with the signatories of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as follows:
1. Prevent the temperature rising above a key threshold of 1.5 degree celsius, Cambodia is committed to launching a long-term strategy of carbon neutrality by 2050
2. Raise renewable energy share to 70 per cent by 2030, which Cambodia has achieved 62 per cent renewable energy capacity
3. Plant over one million trees yearly to achieve 60 per cent forest cover to increase carbon stocks
4. Encourage and call on the international community to raise USD 100 billion per year for the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
5. Promote and increase funding for other climate funds including the adaptation fund, the loss and damage fund, and the food system to combat climate change.
